The Underwriting Consultant II reports into DRMS Underwriting Management and is responsible for the evaluation and selection of risk as well as the establishment of premium levels which ensure the profitable acquisition of new cases as well as the profitable retention of inforce cases within the assigned case size levels.?

The essential functions and responsibilities of this job position include, but are not limited to the following:

Risk Management: Support the development of an underwriting organization focused on high quality risk assessment. This requires the incumbent to:

  • Make appropriate risk, pricing and business decisions and recommendations on all cases within assigned limits
  • Develop personal credibility with clients and peers
  • Develop knowledge of disability products including product provisions, plan design, pricing and contractual benefits
  • Teamwork: Assist in supporting the achievement of Disability RMS as well as client goals. This requires the incumbent to:

  • Utilize technical expertise in risk selection
  • Develop selection and retention of client?s customers through accurate risk assessment and appropriate premium levels that meet profit, persistency and sales objectives
  • Make small financial risk decisions with close supervision
  • Deliver dependable, accurate and timely service and build relationships with all clients
  • Position Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of group insurance underwriting experience required; college degree preferred. High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of disability products including product provisions, plan design, pricing and contractual benefits
  • Creative problem solving/analytical reasoning skills
  • Strong math aptitude
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to be persuasive and to negotiate
  • Ability to work independently and address problems through own initiative and creativity with minimal assistance from senior level underwriters or management
  • Well organized and able to handle multiple priorities
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in a PC environment and MS Word, Excel, and email systems
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, claimants, vendors and others with whom DRMS does business
